GRUEN Glass and Plastic Watch Crystals

The Gruen Watch Company was founded in 1874 by Dietrich Gruen and was owned and led by his heirs (son, Fred Gruen & Grandson George T. Gruen) until the family sold in 1955. In three years the new owners moved out of Cincinnati and located in New York. The name was changed to Gruen Industries, Inc., which shut down sometime in the late 70s if I am not mistaken. The name Gruen was sold to an investor who has licensed people to make watch using the name Gruen most of them have been low cost quartz watches.

Back in the early 2000's I had the pleasure of wanting on one of Dietrich Gruen's great grandsons, a son of George T. Gruen, a local doctor and we have been supplying him with crystals to fit his Gruen watches. It was great to find out that we have been taking care of his crystal needs for years.

Plastic, is the crystal most used during this period and a wide selection of GS plastic crystals are available for Gruen. Cross reference by case number to the GS crystal number is not always possible, since most of the GS crystals for Gruen are not listed by case numbers. A GS crystal catalog with it’s actual size drawing and millimeter measurement is a necessary item need by the watch repairer or jeweler so they can order a crystal to fit Gruen and other watch cases.
