Repairing Old Clocks & Watches

This book by Anthony Whiten, has a higher readability factor than other books on watchmaking. While Donald de Carle's "Practical Watch Repairing" is considered a great book for all, this book is another tool which is easier to use and without as much technical information that can appear useless to the beginner. Step-by-step sequences showing complete movements with all important parts identified in position. This is a practical book and the example movements are the more common timepieces available to the non-affluent collector. It is a hardcover book, which contains 296 pages.

Watch Adjustment By Hans Jendritzki

Hard cover book just reprinted in 2006. Professor Hans Jendritzki is one of the great swiss watch instructors and has done some other books that are considered the best of the best. This book has long been out of print and we should all be thankful to Mrs. Jendritzki, the widow of the Hans Jendritzki for making it possible to be reprinted.

While this book has vast importance for the repair of watches, it does come with a rather strange Liability Disclaimer, that "the information contained in this book was collected by the author based on the level of knowledge at the time. However, some physical units, procedures and terminology have since changed. This book reflects the state of the art in the year 1970. Some aspects may be forbidden today by legal and professional regulations. The application of these procedures can lead to serious health risk. Those involved in the production of this book (and those selling it) assume no responsibility or liability for any damage or injury. This applies as well to any work carried out according to the descriptions and illustrations presented here. They are to be viewed strictly as a point of historical interest." I wonder what is in here that would lead to such a disclaimer.

Glossary of Watchmaking Genius

For a person interested in watchmaking, this booklet provides basic explanations of the intricacies of the inside of a watch. Everything is printed in three languages, English, French and German, which is helpful to communicate with proper watch terms in a second language. The first section deals with how a watch works with “complications”, using texts illustrated by diagrams and sketches. The second section explains the terms used in the first and provides information on watchmaking companies and brands. This publication does not replace the need for a more exhaustive dictionary, however it is a capable tool for providing the layperson with a lot of knowledge on the inside of watches complete with address and names of Swiss watch companies.

Omega Red Book of Case Parts Listings

Omega Red Case Parts Listing Book

We now have extra copies of the Omega Red Book of case parts listings by case numbers. Order the Red Book and you will have the same information on case parts used by most of Omega's World Service Organization network of parts suppliers and retail repair service. Get the same information as I have on Bezels, Bracelets, Crowns, Crystals and many more case parts by case numbers. No need to wait for email replies to your case parts questions, again now it is possible to get a copy of the red book allowing you to look up your own part numbers.

Unfortunately, Omega has only been producing Red Books for about 30 years and Red Books have never had early Omega case number information. In the pre-industry crash years of the 70’s Omega had a lot of different agencies around the world that handled Omega in certain countries like the USA, where the Norman M. Morris Corporation was the official Omega Agents in charge of Omega inside the USA for many decades. Some Cases and Crowns were made right here in the USA and movements came from Switzerland. The final assembly of some watches were done inside the USA, to avoid high duty on finished watch charged by US customs back in the day when the USA still had a watch production industry.

When the watch industry crashed and the long recovery began the new Omega was a different company in many ways than before. It started producing Red Books however as done by all watch companies thru time did not include information on cases that they considered to be old and obsolete. So the Red Books do not contain information on thousands of Pre-1970 case numbers, while it does contain a few. In order to get parts for these older cases companies like Otto Frei www.ofrei.com have to use parts data distributed by Omega and their agents in the 1940’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s to locate part numbers. However, these old data lists are now no longer available and do not give as much information as now found inside the Red Book on models produced in past 35 years or so. When we do not have the part number we put the order in by description like this: case/mvt ring for case number 166.024 and hope that Omega can still provide us with such an item.
